Zoe's Tale (2008) by John Scalzi. A lot of people describe Scalzi's Old Man's War novels as military science fiction, but I would classify its sequel Zoë's Tale as a space opera. He's funny, witty and makes his characters feel like folks you know. This is a retelling of The Last Colony from a different character's point of view. It's a bit like Ender's Shadow–it's a part of another book retold from Zoe's point of view. Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi is set in his Old Man's War universe. Thanks to the wonderful new Evergreen Indiana system I was finally able to read Zoe's Tale by the slightly insane John Scalzi. I'm not sure if you'd like it more or less having read it, but it manages to stand pretty well on its own. Apparently, Zoe's Tale is a parallel story to The Last Colony, which I didn't realize because I hadn't read The Last Colony. Jane Sagan and John Perry have been recruited to establish Roanoke, a new human colony. By John Scalzi John Scalzi is one of my favourite science fiction writers. Zoe's tale begins backstage at a production of A Christmas Carol. John Scalzi returns to the world he first introduced in the excellent Old Man's War with Zoe's Tale, a science fiction adventure that tells the story of teenage Zoe and her experiences as a colonist on a distant planet.
