Tonight I finished reading Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling by Richard Bushman. Said exmormons who read books like Rough Stone Rolling come away disgusted. In his biography of Joseph Smith, “Rough Stone Rolling,” author Richard Lyman Bushman relates a popular Mormon legend/history regarding the Mormon prophet and his embrace of polygamy. The notion that Joseph Smith willingly sacrificed his life at Carthage has been accepted Mormon tradition since the time of Smith's death, exemplified perfectly by the recently popular song about the prophet, “Lamb to the Slaughter.”[1] Smith allegedly referred to himself in this manner, and when he surrendered himself to America: The Power and the Promise” HarperOne, 1999. This is a project that I've had in mind for about a year and a half, but particularly after reading No Man Knows My History by Fawn Brodie. I was in the Vintage store today and saw this same exact Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling for .95. Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company. Anyway, why I want to read these books is because it seems to me that Joseph Smith is really quite a character. I mentioned in an earlier post that I'd be starting the new biography of Joseph Smith entitled Rough Stone Rolling, by Richard Lyman Bushman.
